Mango Ginger - (Curcuma amada Roxb.) is a tropical rhizome in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It belongs to the same genus as turmeric and shares a family with culinary ginger, but its aroma is distinctly different: fresh, bright, and reminiscent of green mango.
Mango ginger is prized for the way it brings a clean mango-like fragrance without the sweetness of ripe fruit. The fresh rhizomes can be sliced, grated, or chopped into pickles, chutneys, relishes, salads, marinades, and spice pastes. It pairs especially well with lime, salt, chilies, mustard seed, coconut, cilantro, and roasted vegetables.
Traditionally used in Indian cooking and herbal preparations, mango ginger contains naturally occurring volatile oils, phenolic acids, curcuminoids, and terpenoids. Published research has also identified antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in mango ginger, making it an interesting crop for cooks who appreciate both flavor and botanical depth.
